Thanks to its maze-like hills, or cerros, its mysterious landscapes, and its historic center, Valparaíso, as it is affectionately known to locals, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Waves of English, German and French immigrants came to Valparaíso for the chance to do business and establish themselves. This is reflected in the architectural styles of the buildings built at that time, which mimic those found in Europe from the mid-19th to early 20th centuries.

Visit the bohemian neighborhood of Cerro Alegre Cerro Alegre is a hip neighborhood with a unique bohemian vibe. The hills are steep, so our top tip is to hop aboard the El Peral funicular. Once you reach the top, you’ll be disgorged onto one of the city’s oldest streets, Paseo Yugoslavo. Wander, admiring the many viewpoints to see the spectacular expanses of the bay. As you make your way down the hill, you’ll come across cozy cafes, bars, and art galleries, as well as swathes of colorful graffiti and murals.

Stroll through the Museo a Cielo Abierto Valparaíso is known for its incredible street art and one of the city’s most notable street art destinations is the Museo a Cielo Abierto, or open-air museum. Ever since it was unveiled in the 1990s, this open-air museum has drawn art aficionados in their droves with its eclectic mix of murals – 20 or so in total. Just wander, taking in the vibrant diversity: a range of abstract kinetic sculptures, impressionistic and surreal styles.

Visit one of the local fisherman’s markets Valparaíso’s seafood is best explored through the variety of seafood markets. The port city of Valparaíso has unrestricted access to the Pacific Ocean, making it a culinary destination not to miss in Chile. Valparaíso seafood is known throughout for the abundance of local treasures from the ocean. Stroll through the seafood markets and chat with the fishermen who spend their days on the seas and get their recommendation for the catch of the day.

Kayak, surf, or snorkel at the beach Up in the north of the city, at the end of Altamirano Avenue, is Playa Torpederas, the city’s most scenic beach. One of only a few in Valparaíso, it can get a bit crowded at times. The water is suitable for swimming but temperatures can get a little icy, and we recommend you come with a picnic lunch. Kayaking, surfing, and snorkeling are both very popular activities, and here you’ll find Chile’s first lighthouse, Punta Ángeles, which is open to the public – don’t miss a nose-round.

La Caperucita y el Lobo Translating from Spanish as ‘Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf,’ La Caperucita’s location was once home to the grandmother of owner Carolina Gatica, who has run the restaurant with her husband Leonardo de la Iglesia since 2012. The restaurant features two large balconies which look out towards the Valparaíso coastline. With outdoor seating, a private dining room, and plenty of nooks and crannies, it is perfect for meals with family and friends or even a romantic date. The eclectic menu focuses on fresh catch, with starters such as crab cakes or ceviche and mains like confit rabbit ramen or fish of the day.
