The idyllic nature of Tayrona National Park, or Parque Tayrona, one of the enchanting national parks in Colombia, is
home to beach after stunning beach, concealed by jungle forest and dramatic hills. Tayrona National Park offers a
significant change of pace from exploring Colombia’s lively, bustling cities, not to mention it has picture-perfect scenery.
Situated in the northern part of Colombia’s coast, it includes 150 square kilometers of land and another 30 square
kilometers of marine reserve. Besides its natural bounty, the park and neighboring mountains are home to various
indigenous communities and several ruins of past settlements.

Tayrona National Park is home to its very own version of the famous Lost City. Pueblito is the archaeological ruins of a former Tayrona indigenous city and can be reached via a strenuous hike up into the hills from Cabo San Juan. You will clamber over giant boulders and work up quite a sweat, but it’s well worth it to see the ruins of a city that was built thousands of years ago in the jungle. Tayrona is also home to the local Kogi indigenous people, descendants of the Tairona culture.

The numerous hiking trails in Tayrona National Park are perfect for wildlife lovers who are interested in discovering flora and fauna native to the Colombian Caribbean. Want a break from the hike? Horseback riding through Tayrona’s many incredible trails is an equally as exciting option. For those interested in adventure, the waters around Tayrona are teeming with coral reefs and colorful fish of all shapes and sizes. Scuba enthusiasts can enjoy incredible dives around Tayrona National Park in nearby Taganga or Santa Marta, from where you’ll take a boat out to the wildlife-rich waters and plunge beneath the surface to enjoy all the natural wonders of the aquatic part of the National Park.

From rare, endemic poison dart frogs, to giant boa constrictors, as well as plenty of birds, mammals, and insects, the park is teeming with amazing animals. Colombia has more species of birds than anywhere else on Earth, and Tayrona is a great place to observe some of the most beautiful – and rarest – in the wild. From the charismatic keel-billed toucans and lance-tailed manakins to the shy and difficult-to-observe blue-knobbed curassow, Tayrona is a bird-watching enthusiast’s dream destination.

Bask On Idyllic Beaches While Cartagena and Santa Marta have lovely beaches, Tayrona National Park takes the spotligh t with its stunning, pristine beaches. Though there are many beaches scattered across the park, the best option is to pick one or two during your stay to relax and enjoy the beauty of Tayrona National Park instead of trying to see them all. The most famous is undoubtedly Cabo San Juan Beach, with idyllic views of the ocean as well as dining options nearby. Other beach options include Neguanje Beach, Cristal Beach, and Bahia Concha Beach for those looking for more of an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Hike El Pueblito The most famous, easily accessible, and arguably the best walk in Tayrona National Park is El Pueblito hike. It starts at Cabo San Juan beach and leads inland through the jungle to an indigenous village El Pueblito. The trip takes an hour and a half one way, and it requires some strength and determination. Bring plenty of water and your best hiking shoes and enjoy this incredible walk through a tropical forest that is full of mysterious sounds and unexpected movements. Pueblito is an archeological site, where you can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the ruins.
