Wellness Tours in Peru Itinerary

Welcome to Peru! Arrive at your hotel in Lima, the City of Kings.

When your flight arrives in Lima, a Kuoda host will welcome you personally and escort you to the hotel. Instead of navigating a new city after a long flight, let us take care of the transportation logistics. We will drop you off at your hotel so you can refresh and enjoy a peaceful evening before the adventure truly begins. Relax with a good night’s rest before your flight to Puerto Maldonado in the morning.

Fly to Puerto Maldonado where the Amazon expedition begins.

This morning after a complimentary breakfast in your hotel, your Kuoda host will meet you in the lobby and accompany you to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado. The Rainforest Expeditions team will be waiting for you when touch down at the small jungle airport. They will collect you and your luggage and help you decide what is essential for the next few days, repacking your belongings into a jungle duffel. You will leave the rest of your larger luggage at the safety deposit in town in order to keep your boat light!

You will travel deep into the jungle by boat, the forest getting thicker, bird cries becoming more noticeable. A river journey just over two hours will take you through local communities and then the “buffer zone” of the 1.3 million hectare Tambopata National Reserve. Keep a vigilant eye peeled for wildlife on the riverbanks!

Lunch will be enjoyed en route, and upon arrival you will receive an orientation of the lodge including a safety briefing and a short presentation on what to expect during your time in the Peruvian jungle.

After an excellent supper, you’ll head into the forest for a twilight excursion, armed with flashlights and headlamps. Witness the transformation to a nocturnal world: animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. Enjoy this chance to immerse yourself into their paradise and learn about their habits, as you walk through their nocturnal habitats.

Macaws And Water Wildlife

This morning you will start the day by exploring the Macaw clay lick. You will set off for a spot on a large river bank, 50m from the cliff, where on most clear mornings dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate in a raucous and colourful spectacle. You will visit at dawn, when the lick is most active, and will get the chance to observe Green-winged, Scarlet and Blue-and-gold macaws. You will then return to the research centre for breakfast.

After breakfast you will keep your body moving on the Floodplain Trail, a 5km trek that covers the tropical rainforest with huge trees, creeks and ponds. Amongst the figs, ceibas, and shihuahuacos, you will look for squirrel and spider monkeys, as well as peccaries. After this you nourish your body with a delicious lunch of local flavors.

The next activity for the day will be a visit to the Pond Platform, a vantage point in the middle of a tiny pond from where you can spot waterfowl and other kinds of animals. This is a thriving area for wildlife and you will be able to observe Muscovy duck, woodpeckers, and flycatchers as well as parakeets. All these animals and more call this pond their home, and this is a fantastic opportunity to see them in their natural habitat.

After a relaxing dinner at the research center, you will have the option of hiking out again tonight, when most animals are active but rarely seen. This could be your chance to spot them!

Exploring the trails

For your third day in the jungle you will have the chance to rest and relax, have some free time to enjoy and meditate amongst the surroundings, after which you will have breakfast.

During the later morning you will set off along the Terra Firme Trail, giving you a taste of an entirely distinct habitat characterised by smaller, thinner trees atop hills and slopes and you will have the chance to spot wildlife native to this area, such as Saddleback tamarins. As you walk near the limits of the swamp you will be instructed to keep your eyes peeled so you can spot Tapir tracks, very rarely seen.

Then you will return for lunch, after which you will venture out to the Palm Swamp Tower. A thirty minute hike will bring you to the palm swamp where dead aguaje palms serve as nests for Red-bellied and Blue-and-gold Macaws. An elevated boardwalk and scaffolding tower allows for eye level observation of the birds as they fly in and out of the nests. You will then return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

Fly to Cusco and drive through the Sacred Valley

After breakfast, the Tambopata Research Center team will escort you back to Puerto Maldonado, retracing your boat journey through the Amazon. They’ll bring you to the Puerto Maldonado airport for your flight to Cusco. Watch out windows as the jungle rises into the snow-capped peaks of the Andes! We will be waiting for you when touch down at our small Andean airport and will provide you with a delicious to-go lunch. Then, before you can even feel the altitude, whisk you into the Sacred Valley.

You’ll first immerse yourself in the history of the impressive Sacsayhuaman, an Incan fortress overlooking the city. Continuing on just a few minutes outside of Cusco, true Peruvian countryside will stretch away on either side of you, cows and sheep grazing tranquilly road-side. Your final stop for the evening will be at your hotel in the heart of the tranquil Sacred Valley. Remember, your Kuoda guide and driver are at your disposal – please feel free to stop for photos, stretch your legs, and breathe in the clear mountain air along the way!

Private tour of Ollantaytambo and enjoy a Pachamanca feast.

Today, we will take you to the ancient town of Ollantaytambo, one of the few remaining places in Peru that retains its original Incan urban planning. You’ll note still-functioning street canals, multi-family houses with secret interior courtyards and iconic Incan trapezoidal doors! Here we’ll visit the Incan fortress perched on the mountainside overlooking the sleepy pueblo, and learn about nearby stone quarries and the pivotal Incan battle fought here.

We hope you worked up an appetite this morning, because next on the schedule is a true Peruvian feast: the traditional Pachamanca! The centuries-old Pachamanca tradition allow you to get more in touch with the Pachamama (Mother Earth). It involves marinating lamb, pork, chicken, and potatoes in a variety of Andean ingredients and cooking them to perfection in an underground oven. You’ll witness each step of the process: how the oven is prepared, how white-hot stones are layered, and how the feast materializes before your eyes!

While waiting for your feast to roast, make sure to wander through the grounds’ organic garden, smell the fresh-roasted coffee produced by the farm’s head roaster, and sample some of the varieties of cañazo (a local Andean spirit) that are produced on-site at the one-of-a-kind distillery.

Upon completion of your tour, we will bring you back to your hotel for an evening spent at leisure, allowing you to bask in the peacefulness tucked away in the Andes, perhaps taking this opportunity to meditate and feel closer to the energy around you, or visiting the spa at your hotel to renew and restore your body after your travels so far.

One day hiking along the famous Inca Trail

Today, prepare to keep your body moving as you walk in the footsteps of the Inca and arrive proudly on-foot to Machu Picchu! We’ll collect you from your hotel bright and early this morning and drive through the picturesque Sacred Valley to the train station in Ollantaytambo, where we’ll board the Vistadome train.

You and your guide will disembark the train at the Inca Trail trailhead found at Kilometer 104, and from here you will walk the lovely uphill path to the ruins of Wiñaywayna. As you walk, your guide will point out orchids and other jungle plants, the Urubamba River will rush below you, and you’ll marvel at the power of nature tucked away in the Andes as well as the Inca’s strength and ingenuity. When you reach the ruins of Wiñaywayna, you’ll rest, explore, and enjoy a healthy and delicious al fresco lunch. Then you’ll hit the trail once again! A walk of approximately two hours brings you to Inti Punku, the famous Sun Gate.

You’ll approach this stone construction up one last flight of stairs, catch your breath, and then lose it again as you catch your first glimpse of Machu Picchu, nestled and hidden between steep peaks below you.

Descend triumphantly over ancient paving stones to the lost citadel, and relish in the audacity of a construction of this caliber in this stunning location before catching the bus to Aguas Calientes and checking in to your hotel. Your guide will then leave you to rest, refresh, and enjoy a delicious and well-earned dinner on-site.

Private tour of Machu Picchu and back to Cusco

This is your day to enjoy a private tour of Machu Picchu. In the morning after breakfast in your hotel, you and your guide will board the bus to the entrance of the ruins. You will then ascend stone steps, through heavy tree cover to finally emerge at the top of the world – Machu Picchu! Your expert guide will give you a private tour of the ancient city, introducing you to the history of this spectacular citadel and showing you the most important temples and ceremonial sites.

Optional: If you’re feeling adventurous and full of energy still, you can either hike the steep Huayna Picchu peak for the postcard view of the city, or scale Machu Picchu Mountain to reach the highest point in the park (depending on availability, both hikes are limited-entry and require advance notice). Delight in an alternate perspective of Machu Picchu from an exclusive vantage point!

After completing your Machu Picchu visit you will descend to Aguas Calientes for lunch and your return Vistadome train. We will be waiting to collect you in the Ollantaytambo train station and will bring you to your hotel for the evening.

Private tour of Cusco and afternoon cooking class

After a delicious and varied breakfast in your hotel, your private guide will proceed to illuminate Cusco’s rich tapestry woven by its inviting cobblestone streets, charming neighborhoods, and astounding landmarks.

You’ll begin with vehicle, chauffered through the city with the bohemian neighborhood of San Blas, known for its whitewashed adobe buildings and quaint blue balconies, home to generations of renowned Cusco artisans.

From there you’ll stop in at the colonial Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas, then down to the Santo Domingo monastery, perched atop the most sacred of Incan sites, the Qoricancha temple of the sun. Once bathed in 24-karat gold long-since pilfered by Spanish conquistadors, this temple is now an astounding blend of Incan stonemasonry and colonial architecture. Make sure to pause along the way to feel the presences of those who created and walked these streets before you as you marvel at the incomparable Incan foundations supporting each building in the area, in particular at the 12-angled stone nestled in a wall that has withstood the test of time (as well as a couple of earth-shattering earthquakes!).

Upon conclusion of your tour your guide will leave you with suggestions as to where you find a delicious and nutritious local lunch, but nothing too heavy, as you will want to show up to your afternoon activity hungry!

In the early afternoon, head to one of Cusco’s best restaurants and spend the afternoon learning about Peru’s culinary history and current cuisine from one of the best area chefs. You will learn how to make Peruvian starters and entrees, accompanied by a never-ending stream of fresh and local snacks and samples fresh from the restaurant’s oven. Delight your palate with exotic fruits, make Pisco-based cocktails, learn the traditional Peruvian way to slice vegetables, and spend the afternoon laughing and enjoying this truly special cooking class. As the culmination of today’s class, you will sit down and dine on a traditional Peruvian dinner you prepared yourself!

Fly from Cusco to Lima for your international flight home

Enjoy a last morning to wake up refreshed and have a nice, slow breakfast before setting out to explore the Inca citadel on your own. At the appropriate time, we will escort you to the Cusco airport for your return flight to Lima. Watch the windows as the snow-capped peaks of the Andes become coastal desert!

Your Kuoda Lima host will meet you upon arrival and bring you to the hotel attached to the airport where you can relax while you wait for your flight.

At the appropriate time, we will bring you to the airport for your journey home. We will help you check in for your international flight and wish you buen viaje!
