1. Tambopata Research Center

Tambopata research center

Tambopata Research Center is located in the primary forest of the Tambopata Reserve in front of the Bahuaja Sonene National Park in Madre de Dios. The wildlife here is outstanding, and here you have the best opportunity to see some of the world’s rarest animals. It takes about five hours to reach the lodge via boat which travels upstream from the Refugio Amazonas.

The lodging is on a full board basis, and the common areas are spacious and mostly open. The rooms have open views of the surrounding forest, and bedrooms are separated from one another by light cane fencing, and drapes instead of doors. Every room has an on-suite bathroom, mosquito nets and basic furniture for your clothes.

The lodge offers various excursions like jungle trails, visits to the nearby macaw project, jungle tower and pond platform. The location of the lodge makes it one of the most remote lodges in South America, which means that it’s surrounded by the best wildlife the Peruvian Amazon jungle has to offer.

2. Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción

Inkaterra was built on a former cacao and rubber plantation, which were the ground of what was back in the 50’s known as “Fundo Concepcion”, an Amazon Catholic medical mission center. Surrounded by an enchanting and serene lush setting with 819 hectares of natural rainforest, and even though it is remote – it is only a 25-minute boat ride down river from Puerto Maldonado.

This beautiful lodge is well-known for its excellent service and attention to detail. The lodging is on a full board basis, and there is also a small spa which offers treatments and massages made from indigenous plants of the jungle. The upper floor of the lodge has a mezzanine overlooking the rainforest. Rooms are cabana-style, and all of them come with an on-suite bathroom, mosquito nets, screened porch and hammocks.

They offer a well-planned menu of different jungle excursions when you arrive at the lodge. They include rainforest trails, boat cruises, and canopy walks. Do not worry if you don’t speak Spanish, all tours are provided by an experienced English speaking guide.

3. Refugio Amazonas

Refugio Amazonas

Refugio Amazonas is a luxurious oasis in the wilderness. Located deep within the rainforest, located in a 200-hectare private reserve within the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve, the lodge is secluded and private. It takes about two hours to travel from Puerto Maldonado by car, and a short 1-hour boat drive to arrive at the lodge.

The rooms have stunning open views of the surrounding jungle, which allows guests to awake with jungle sounds in the morning. Room rates include all land and river transportation to and from Puerto Maldonado, guided group activities, all meals and accommodation.

Refugio Amazonas should be your top-pick if you are traveling with children as it offers a variety of kid-friendly, adventure-focused, and science activities. There is even an opportunity to contribute to science or discover new species at the headquarters of their Citizen Science program, Wired Amazon.  Refugio Amazonas is a great lodge for nature-loving families.

It is conveniently located only about 2-hours from Puerto Maldonado, and it is the perfect place to learn more about the jungle communities, while supporting them at the same time.

The open wall rooms face straight into the Amazon rainforest and give visitors a feel of truly embodying the jungle lifestyle. Imagine waking up to jungle sounds and the fresh smells of the jungle plants, Posada Amazonas provide an authentic experience for sure. All rooms include all land and river transportation to and from Puerto Maldonado, exciting jungle excursions and all meals.

The expeditions offer immersion in nature as well as a cultural exchange in the Peruvian Amazon aimed at providing a comprehensive experience of the rainforest. Tambopata Research Center, Refugio Amazonas and Posada Amazonas all belong to Rainforest Expeditions which make a meaningful contribution to the sustainable efforts preserving and protecting the precious land and wildlife populations, as well as caring for the native people.
