If you are looking for one-of-a-kind private tours, Lake Titicaca and the wider Puno region has abundant options, but few will be as enriching as those that bring you face-to-face with the locals.

Ask Kuoda to arrange a tour as part of your private Peru holiday and get know more about the customs, ways of life and time-honored traditions of the island communities.

Uros Islands: Among the most fascinating lake inhabitants are the Uros people, who live on self-constructed floating islands. The islands were originally built for defensive reasons, as they could be easily moved if the inhabitants were threatened, and are constructed from the sturdy totora reed, a multipurpose plant that the Uros people also use for housing, food and medicine. Once every three months, the Uros people redo the top layer of reeds, which forms the island floor.

Taquile Islands: Still hungry for more cultural immersion? Consider a visit to Taquile Island, whose inhabitants are well-known for their skillful weavings. UNESCO have even honored the islanders’ textiles, declaring them “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.” Because Taquile remained isolated from the mainland up until the mid-20th century, the islanders were rarely exposed to outside influences and many ancient traditions are preserved here. Kuoda can arrange illuminating overnight stays with local families.

Amantaní Island: Not far from Taquile is the lake isle of Amantaní, where farmers grow wheat, quinoa and potatoes on agricultural terraces, and also herd sheep, alpacas and llamas. The Amantaní islanders are particularly deft with their hands, and are known for producing fantastic weavings, textiles and ceramics. Homestays with locals can also be arranged here.

For a truly eye-opening experience, visit the communities who make their home on the highest navigable lake in the world. Contact us today and get your free Peru trip quote.  At Kuoda Travel, all trips are custom and personally designed for you by one of our professional travel experts.
